Sometimes I do whimsey... but rarely on demand.

This afternoon we had a talk about why pets aren’t allowed in restaurants. You really wanted to be able to take your cat, which is imaginary, into Noodles for dinner.

You seemed to understand that some animals are allowed in restaurants, but that most animals are not. For instance, you readily identified why dogs and cats shouldn’t be allowed in restaurants, saying “They would get hair all over the place.”

But as I tried to explain that certain “pets” are allowed in restaurants (so that you might have some understanding of service dogs), you quickly said “Well, you could take your pet lobster into a restaurant, as long as you didn’t run around.”

To which I had no answer.

Angie and Alphie are home from work and school this week, which means I have the strange experience of leaving them to go to work in the mornings.

This morning I moseyed through the act of getting ready and then announced “Ok, ladies, I am leaving! I will see you tonight!” and kissed each of them.

Then, as I walked towards the stairs to actually leave, I revised my plan and said “Actually, I am going to go downstairs and make an English muffin, and then I am leaving!”

As I strode down the stairs Angie called “It’s trash day.”

So I again revised my order of operations, and answered “OK, I will take out the trash, and then I will make a muffin, and then I will leave.”

To which Alphie responded “No! We will take out the trash! The ladies!”

I am sure I will still be taking out the trash, but it was darn cute to see Alphie refer to herself and her mother collectively.

We drove home in the dark today. You were relatively concerned about this.

It was the first work day after the fall daylight savings shift and people were not behaving very well. And all the car headlights, the darkness outside, and the fact that all the restaurants seemed closed concerned you greatly.

The radio was on in the background, generating noise that I wasn’t really paying attention to, since it was a little disconcerting to drive in the dark. You were extremely quiet sitting in the backseat, unable to even read or draw.

Suddenly you said “We do not say ‘Shut up’. Family Guy and American Dad sometimes say it, so I can’t watch them.”

I told you that you were correct, even as I tried to figure out why you had chosen to expound upon that topic. It struck me as I tuned into what was happening in the car a little more.

“Did they just say that on the radio?” I asked.

You replied “yes”.

I said “Sorry, babe, I’ll find another station” and started to flip though the pre-sets.

Before I had made it through two channels you spoke up and said “We hardly ever hear that when we listen to my favorite song!”

And that line of reasoning is why we listened to Flogging Molly on the drive home.
