So,
way back in November I got a nice little email from AJ at
Thingamababy which requested that, if I like, I formulate a list of at least 5 items I want for my child, with the idea that perhaps other people might find what I had to say useful.
I am a bad man. Firstly (I love that word!), he wanted them like a week ago, and I didn’t even drop him a note saying “Thank you for the thought and the inclusion, but it will take me a little while because I am slow and inattentive.”
Secondly, I have no idea what I want for my child. It isn’t that I don’t love her, I swear I do. It is that I am completely baffled by her. What she really, really wants is either to stand up and walk, or take my keys and drive herself to college so that she won’t have to put up with me for the next eighteen years. Most days it is very difficult to tell which it is. She will be a few days shy of six months old when Christmas arrives, and I can’t tell if her tastes are more or less sophisticated than her old man’s.
I like
modern day dad’s list. Interestingly, I also believe Alphie could do with more long sleeve onesies... And I am especially in tune with the request that people use
AnySoldier.com. But that is his list, and it doesn’t really fit for my daughter.
AJ's list is far more complete than any I could come up with. I would have to put
Lummelhaus Play House from Haba on any list I made, but, seriously, that would be for me and not for my daughter, ’cause I
love forts and such. She just doesn’t see furniture as mobile yet.
Daddy*drama's list has the
Manuella Elephant doll that looks adorable and seems like it would quickly become Alphie’s favorite stuffed animal ever.
Odin's 2005 christmas wishlist, from over at
ex machina has
Free to Be... You and Me, which I did actually add to
my wishlist back in August. I probably meant to share it with “the girl”.
Kevin, at
WebGoonies wants a maid and a cook for he and his wife, and I think that is a great idea. That would totally allow me to
play video games in a clean living room spend more time with the babe. And it has been
established that I can’t cook.
And Ed at
ParentingToys has a nice short
list that contains the last thing I need in my life right now... an
Xbox 360. (Note, I won’t say “No” if anyone wants to send one my way... I just won’t win that Father of the Year award I was aiming for. Or any marathons.)
So what would I like for my daughter this holiday season? I would like some ideas as to what she and I can do together that will keep her from being completely bored of her old man. We have been to a few used bookstores, and she loves being out and about, but it is winter and the last few weeks have been miserable. So generally, we futz around the house, and maybe we read a little together, and she rolls around on the ground a bit, and she loves her exersaucer.
But these are generally mind-numbingly boring for both of us, and eventually we try to ignore one another and take a nap. So, for the coming spring, where is a good place to go and meet strangers and enjoy ourselves? Because that’s the best thing I could get her this Christmas.
